Gamercraft is an Esports tournament app with an anti-cheating algorithm to detect smurfs and cheaters. They support all League of Legends tournaments and provide a fair, fun and community-oriented atmosphere for all competitors.

As someone with little to no background playing League of Legends (OK, fine. No background), I wanted to stay true to the app's competitive nature and appeal to the amateur gaming community without sounding like an outsider.

Engage competitors and give tournament updates

Collaborating with a UX designer and the engineering team to ensure accuracy, I wrote a series of new push notifications. I wanted to reinforce the fun and competitive nature of the tournaments.

Team awaiting payment

The team is registered, but payment is due before it's official. However, the captain may have already paid the entry fee. How do I let someone know they might need to pay, but maybe they don't? I tell the user to expect a second notification if their captain didn't cover their entry fee.

This notification follows "Team awaiting payment" if the captain paid when they registered their team. Now, the team has secured their spot in the tournament.

Teammate paid

If the team captain doesn't pay the entire entry fee at registration, each teammate must pay their share before their team can join a tournament. Everyone on the team receives this notification each time a teammate pays. I used this opportunity to build excitement and anticipation.

Team on waitlist

The team is registered, but they're on the waitlist. They'll enter the tournament after another team leaves, and they're next in line.

This was a fun one to write. I wanted to match the user's excitement, knowing their wait is over and it's time to throw down. I went with "bowed out" to stay consistent with the previous notification.

Team left tournament

In this scenario, the captain removed their team before the tournament started. Ultimately, this is bad news. I chose words highlighting the competitive tournament atmosphere.

This situation is slightly different from the previous notification. Either the team is still on the waitlist or has to finish paying their entry fee. I reassure them that there will be other opportunities to compete.
